Abstract

13,557. Featherstone, J. June 13. Gas and like engines, starting. The starting- shaft a, b, Figs. 2 and 3, is in two pieces carrying the parts j, k of a clutch. The part b operates the motor shaft b<1>, and the part a carries the starting-handle c and has a coarse thread carrying a nut e with a ratchet face f engaging a pawl g on the stationary bracket m. A spring m<1> is interposed between the parts m, e. Should a premature ignition take place, the nut e, which is prevented from rotating by the pawl g, moves longitudinally and disengages the clutch j, k. On starting, the pin h<1> throws the clutch h out of gear. A tumbler engages teeth u and holds the nut e stationary until it engages the handle. In a modification, the parts a, b are in one and the clutch j, k is dispensed with. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the coarse thread is dispensed with, the clutch j, k has a flange k<1>, and the part b of the starting-shaft carries a ratchet-wheel o. Between the wheel o and the flange k<1> is a compound lever r, r' carried by the bracket m and having a pawl p, p<1>. On back - firing occurring, the wheel o presses on the pawl p, p<1> and operates the lever r, r<1>, which presses on the flange k<1> aud disengages the clutch.
