Application filed May 2, 1911. Serial No. 624,618.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Jan. 2,1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting Devices for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is .a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertain's' to make and use the same.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines such "as are usually employed in connection with'automobiles and various panying drawing forms a part, inwhich;
the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure. 1 is a view showing the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine, the fly-wheel mounted thereon and my improve ment usedin connection therewith, and the construction of which 'is shown in section,
and; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 20f Fig. 1. g
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the crank shaftof an internal combustion engine, which shaft is provided with the usual flywheel a and, in the practice of my invention I provide a supplemental crank shaft 1) which passes through and is'supported'in a bracket sleeve 0 having an angularly arranged supporting plate 0 rigidly secured to apart 0 of the frameof the engine or the framework of an automobile in which the engine is used, and the sleeve 0 and supple mental shaft 6 are in axial line with the crank shaft a and the supplemental shaft 1) longitudinally movable through said sleeve. 7
The end of the crank shaft a is provided on one side thereof with a lock tooth or projectiona and the adjacent end of the P. HInskY, a citizen of the United States, and resldmg supplemental shaft 6 is provided with a head b which is rigidly secured thereto or thereon and is provided with a lock tooth or projection b which corresponds with and is adapted to operate in connection with the lock tooth or projection a? on the shaft a.
Theend of the sleeve 0 opposite the flywheel a is provided with a recess Z) in which is placed a spiral spring of through which the supplemental shaft 6 also passes,
mental shaft 6 is a crank arm 6 composed of two similar parts securedtogether as shown at e by bolts or screws, orin any desired manner, and the form of the separate parts of the crank-arm is such as to'form therein a longitudinal chamber 6 Mounted on the outer end of the supplemental shaft bwithin the crank arm 6 is a gear f which is keyed to said shaft, and the free end of the crank arm e is provided with a spindle g which passes therethrough and islprovided with a handle member g which. is keyed thereto, and mounted on said spindle within the crank arm 6 isa gear f which is secured to said spindle and which is similar to the gear f, and between the gears fend f are two other gears f and i which mesh with the gears f and f respectively, and with each other. 5 v
Secured to the inner side of the end portion of the crank arm e through which the supplemental shaft 1) passes .is a ratchet wheel b, said ratchet wheel being secured to said arm, in theform of construction shown, by screws b and the spring (2 :bears on said ratchet wheel or .on a washer it placed between said wheel and said spring,and' said spring normally operates to hold the supplemental shaft 1) in its outermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, but said shaft may be forced inwardly so thatthe lock tooth or and mounted on the outer end of the suppleprojection 12 on the head 6 thereof will engage the lock tooth or projection a on the crank shaft a when said shaft is turned.
Mounted onthe outer side of the sup'porting plate 0 of thebracket sleeve 0 are a pluarc of a circle around and above said ratchet wheel, and springs i are employed in connection with said p'awls sons to hold them at all times in position for operation in connection with the ratchet wheel 71,, and when I the supplemental shaft is in its outermost is forced inwardly so as to operatethe crank shaft a, the pawls a will be fully in engagement with the'teeth of the ratchet wheel or in position'to fully engage said teeth, and said .pawls are also 1 arranged as shown 1n Fig. 2 so that they will fully engage the teeth of the wheel h at different times n lts ,revolution or in such manner as to permlt only a sli h-t backward movement of the shaft of said wheel and of the crank arm 6. It is-a well known fact that in starting or cranking internal combustion engines there is frequently a quick backward rotation or what is known as a back-kick of the crank shaft or the starting shaft of the engine and this results in -a quick backward movement .of the crank arm which frequently results in serious injury to the operator, but with my invention this danger to the operator in starting or cranking n- 'gines of the class specified 1s entirely done away with, as will be seen fronrthe foregoing 'description,' the accomp any1ng draw ing forming partof sald descrlption and the following statement of the operatlon of cranking or'start-ing the engme.
With my improvement theoperation of starting or cranking the eng ne is as fol- 'lowsz'The operator first firmly grasps the handle g and by means thereof and the crank arm e forces the supplemental shaft 6 inwardly against the operation of the spring d until the locking tooth or projection on the head 22 of said shaft is in position to engage the corresponding .tooth or pro ection a on the shaft a. The crank arm e 1s thengiven a quick turn to the right and this :would'be reversed and the-gear f wouldbe .turned thereby and'the series of gears-in the crank arm, would turnincluding the gear f audits spindle gand handle 9 but the v crank arm, itself, would remain motionless;
copies or thllpatont inay be obtained for being held by the.ratchet h, and no'injury would result to the operator.
In order that '.there may be ,no-doubt' as to the engagement" of one for more of the sitions,
I pawls i with the ratchet wheel h the said pawls are so arrangedthat they will operate at different intervals on the ratchet h, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and at the end of each cranking operation the shaft b is thrown out of engagement with the shaft a by the spring d, as will be readily understood. I Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cranking apparatus for internal combustion engines consisting of a supplemental shaft mounted, in axial line with the crank shaft of the engine and movable toward and from-the same and adapted to enga e the same, a spring normally holding sai su 1 plemental shaft out of engagement with t e.
crank shaft a crank arm mounted on the outer end of the supplemental shaft and provided with an internal chamber, a gear mounted, on said shaft within said chamber and keyed to said. shaft, a handle spindle mounted in the outer end of said crank arm,
arm and keyed to said spindle, intermediate gears mountedin said arm and -meshing' with said first named gears and with'each other, a ratchet wheel secured to the inner a gear mounted on said spindle within said.
side of the said arm where the supplemental shaft passes therethrough and through which 1 said supplemental shaft passes, and a plurality of suitably supported pawls adapted to engage said ratchet Wheel;
2. cranking apparatus for internal com bustion engines comprising a longitudinally 'j movable shaft mountedin axial line with the crank shaft of the engine and adapted -to engage the same, a tension device. for holding said shaft out of engagement with the crank shaft, a hollow crankarmrmounted on the outerv end of said shaft, ahandle spindle mountedin the free end of said arm, gears mounted on said shaft and on said handle spindle within said arm and keyed to said shaft and to said spindle, intermediate gears mounted in said arm and meshing with said shaft and spindle gears and with eachother, a ratchet wheel secured to the inner side of'the inner e of'said arm and through which said sh ft passes, and spring operated pawls normally in engagement with said ratchet in different operative po- ,In testimony-that I claim the foregoing as my mvention 1' have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses'this 29th day of April 1911.
