Fuses for projectiles ; grenades ; projectiles.- The shrapnel shell shown in Fig. 1 has a combined time and percussion fuse F in the nose, arranged to ignite a small charge of powder in the tube E. This primary explosion drives a firing-pin H, supported in the lower end of the tube by a lead collar, on to the detonator I, and ignites the bursting-charge G<2>. The chamber J<1> may contain a smoke-producing composition. The firing-pin H with its propelling- charge may be applied to delayed-action percussion fuses, in which case the propelling-charge is ignited by the retarding- composition, and it is also described in conjunction with a fuse which may be used as a direct-action percussion, time, or delayedaction percussion fuse. The bursting-charge of the shell may be insulated from the walls of the projectile by an air-space or by a non-conducting jacket. The invention is stated to be also applicable to grenades.
