Abstract

9871. Lamplough, F., and Threlfall, T. April 27. Transmitting power; compressing. - Apparatus for the pneumatic transmission of power, applicable to motor-cars, comprises a multi-cylinder air - compressor driven from the engine shaft a, Fig. 1, a similar compressed-air engine driving the shaft t, an air reservoir n, and heating- arrangements for the compressed air. The engine shaft a is provided with a single crank b which drives an air-pump having preferably six cylinders c arranged in a circle. The crank b is connected to one end of a rod d, the other end of which is coupled by a universal joint e to a fixed pivot in the centre of the apparatus. The crankrod d carries a boss g with arms h, one for each cylinder, the arms being connected by universal joints to the piston-rods j. The pumps are furnished with inlet valves l and delivery valves m leading into the reservoir n, from which the compressed air is conducted to a coil connected to the opening o and heated by the exhaust steam or gas from the engine. From the heated coil the air passes through a suitable valve and opening p into the valve chamber of the compressed-air engine, from which it is distributed by the valve 4 to a series of cylinders q arranged similarly to the pump cylinders and driving the shaft t through similar mechanism, but smaller in diameter. The valve 4 is connected to the short shaft 7, which is driven from the shaft 6 through a parallel intermediate shaft and skew gearing of the kind described in Specification No. 3414, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Steam engines], the shaft 6 being driven from the tail 11 of the oscillating crank-rod y. The varying pressure in the reservoir n may be utilized to control the running of the engine.
