Abstract
8314. Hall, J. April 6. Stretching.-Relates to apparatus for stretching textile fabrics, applicable to calendering and mangling machines &c. The apparatus comprises two narrow rotary wheels, each separately mounted and capable of being turned to various degrees of angularity with the fabric. Combined with each wheel is a stationary frame carrying rollers, round each set of which passes a flexible band of india-rubber or like material. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the material is stretched in passing over the two wheels a', a<2>. These wheels are mounted upon pillars b<1>, b<2>, Figs. 1 and 2, each in two parts, the lower fixed and the upper capable of swivelling. Mounted alongside the wheels and upon the same axes are the stationary frames f<1>, f<2>. Each frame is formed to fit a squared part of the wheel axes and is locked in position by nuts g. The frames carry flanged rollers h<1>, h<2>, h<3>, h<4>. The rollers carry a pair of endless bands k<1>, k<2>. Each frame carries a loose part f <3> slotted and fixed to the frame by nuts l. A pair of adjusting-screws m serve to alter the position of the loose part to tighten or slacken the bands. The upper part of each pillar carries a worm quadrant p, and the lower part carries a shaft q bearing two worms r<1>, r<2>, one fixed and the other adjustably secured by collars s, and, if desired, provided with a sliding key enabling it to be set at various positions along the shaft. One end of the shaft has a hand wheel, the other end sliding freely in the bearing. The worms and quadrants are so arranged that upon turning the hand-wheel the rollers h<2> approach each other as the ones h<3> separate. In use, the wheels are first set to the proper angle for giving the desired stretching, the edge of the fabric being then led between the bands k<1>, k<2> and the wheels. The edges of the material emerge from the apparatus after passing the rollers h<4>.
