Abstract
4971. Lang, A. A. R. March 1. Building-blocks for hollow walls &c. consist of two or more parts A, B, Fig. 2, of concrete, connected by tie-rods E, and having a space or spaces between them. The tierods may be embedded at both ends during the moulding of the blocks or may be embedded in one part only and passed through holes in the other parts as shown in Fig. 7, nuts J being screwed on their ends. Tubes or ferrules K mounted on the tie-rods keep the parts at the requisite distance apart, and some of the spaces may be filled with grouting. The parts of the block may be moulded separately and provided with recesses, into which the heads of the tie-rods are afterwards inserted. Walls are reinforced by horizontal and vertical rods G, H, Figs. 5 and 6, secured to the tie-rods E. The exposed parts of the tie-rods E in the air spaces not filled with grouting may be surrounded with cement or other material in order to preserve them. Fig. 11 shows a column constructed of a modified form of the block.
