Abstract

1895. Ashton, A. Jan 25. Booms for harbours.-Buoyant booms may be rotated so that the attached nets are rolled upon them. Each end of the hollow boom 1 is fitted with rings 5, upon which are wound several turns of chain or rope, the length of which is somewhat greater than the depth of the net 12. The free ends of the chain or rope are attached to submersible buoys 14, hollow and ballasted with concrete. When the net is extended, the upper parts of the buoys are full of air, forced into them by pump 23. To roll the net on the boom, cocks are opened and water enters the buoys, causing them to sink and rotate the boom. The boom is fitted with mooring ropes at each end, which may also be used for towing them. In use, two lines of booms are arranged so that the nets of one line are opposite the spaces between the nets in the other line. Harbours are thus protected against torpedoes and submarine vessels.
