Abstract

1117. Richter, J. Jan. 15. Ratchet gearing; clutches.-In freewheel clutches and ratchet gearing, wedges, engaging recesses in both driving and driven parts, are used and may be put in or out of action by cams engaging projections on the wedges. Wedges d, Figs. 2 and 3, carried in recesses c in the shaft a, engage recesses in the wheels b, and are pressed forward by springs g bearing on pieces h<1> fixed to the shaft. Drive takes place in the direction of the arrow. Projections e on the wedges fit recesses j in a longitudinally-movable rod i, tbe recesses being so arranged that the wedges may be pressed back and put out of action. The recesses in the rod i may be so formed that the wedges are operated by rotation of the shaft. The wedges may be carried by the outer part and operated by a rod outside the shaft, in which case the drive is in the opposite direction. The device may be arranged to act in either or both directions by the use of two wedges d, as shown in Fig. 4, either or both of which may be controlled by a split rod i<1>, i<2> provided with separate recesses. In Fig. 5, the wedge d is shown carried in the driven part a, teeth being formed on the part b. A ratchet drive in the direction of the arrow is obtained, the direction being reversed if the wedge is carried by the part b and the teeth formed on the part a.
