Abstract

475. Beach, T. Jan. 8. Coking.-The sliding doors of coke ovens are formed with one or more vertical flues, having external gas escape and admission ports, and gas is burnt in the flues to ensure complete coking of the end parts of the charge in the oven. The door 1 is formed with a sinuous or zigzag vertical flue 4, communicating with ports 5, 6 which open externallyof the oven. Large coke-oven doors may be formed with more than one flue, each flue being provided with ports for the gas. When the door is in use, the dampers 7, 8 are drawn back and purified or other gas is passed into the flue 4 through the port 5. The gas burns in the flue 4 and escapes by the port 5. When the oven is drawn, the dampers 7, 8 are slidden back and prevent the entrance of air to the flue and the consequent cooling of the door. An inspection aperture 2 is provided.
