Abstract

Coking.-The regenerators used in connexion with a battery of coke ovens are so arranged that there is no reversal of the direction of flow of the heating-gases in the heatngflues of the ovens. After circulating in the oven flues, the products of combustion pass down flues f into flues a which run the length of the battery and lead to a distributing-pit ,q divided into four chambers by walls h, m, each of the chambers being provided with an opening A movable cap n is formed with a diametrical partition o which serves, when made to coincide with the wall h or m, to divert the combustion gases into one of the regenerators r', r. Air is supplied through a pipe l to one chamber of a second pit g<1> and passes along either of the regenerators r, r' to the pit g and thence to a flue L. The heated air from the flue L rises into flues L<1>, whence it is distributed to the heating-flues. When the caps of the pits coincide with the walls m, h<1>, the products of combustion which pass from the flues a are diverted into the regenerator r and thence through the channel k to the boilers &c., while the air passes from the pipe l, through the preheated regenerator r'. When the caps are turned to coincide with the partitions h, m<1>, the combustion gases pass through the regenerator r' and the air passes through the regenerator r. The caps may be operated simultaneously.
