Abstract

190,552. Orr, R. J. Sept. 27, 1921. .Machines for writing music; platen rotation.- A music typewriter comprises key-operated devices for advancing or retracting the platen to position the printed notes on the stave, such devices being effective in either the normal or the shift position of the platen. The platen-roller 22 is rotated backwards and forwards through arcs of one to four line-spaces by means of sets of key-levers 75, 76 respectively. The platen-roller is geared to a shaft 45 which is mounted in bosses 48 on the shift frame 23, and brackets 46 on the shift rail 26. The shaft is feathered to ratchet-wheels 60, 61 co-operating with pawls 66, 67 connected by links 73, 74 to slides 70, 71 engaging the curved ends 87 of the key-levers 75, 76 respectively, the stroke of the key-levers being limited by slots 85 of different depths in a plate 84. The pawls 66, 67 are pivoted on rocking discs 68, 69 and are normally disengaged from the ratchet-wheels. The slides are guided at the top by sockets 90 on the brackets 46, and are guided at the bottom by a stationary guide 72. To render the above-described mechanism operative in either the normal or shift position of the platen, the mechanism is mounted to shift with the platen. Preferably, the pivot 78<1> of the levers 75, 76, and the stop-plate 84 are secured to arms 79 on rods 80 which are secured at the top to the shift rail 26 and are guided at the bottom by stationary blocks 81. The shift frame is operated by the usual shift-keys 37. Keyboards.-The keys 31, Fig. 2, bear upper and lower-case music characters. Long characters such as the treble clef are divided and are printed by the successive operation of two keys, of which the first is associated with silent-key mechanism. The keys are provided with horizontal and vertical gauge lines indicating the height and width of the characters. The horizontal lines represent the stave, and the characters are placed thereon at positions indicating which of the keys 77, 78 of the key-levers 75, 76 is to be operated in printing a character by the successive operation of two keys.
