Abstract

26,973. Brooks, H. C. Dec. 27. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to improvements in the steering and driving axles of motor road vehicles occasioned by the use of spring connexions between the main and secondary axles. The front secondary axle J, Figs. 1 and 2, is attached by means of a fork H and bolts I to a cross-bar F, which is provided with sleeves G adapted to slide on bolts D surrounded by spiral springs K and mounted on a frame A. This frame is fixed directly to the end of the main axle when used with vehicles in which the whole front axle swivels, but when used with a steering-axle, the frame is provided with a knuckle joint M which is attached to the fork at the end of the main axle. The frame attachment for the rear axle takes the form shown in Fig. 4, and, in the case of live-axle driven cars, the cross-bar F is formed with a ball, roller, or other bearing O which projects through a slot in the frame A and carries the secondary axle N to which the wheel is fixed. The inner end of the axle N is provided with a hollow cube which forms the outer member of a universal joint, the inner member R of which is formed at one end of the driving-axle S and consists of a steel cube having two corners rounded off and four flattened faces T formed at each of the remaining corners. By this means the block R, which is also free to slide longitudinally, may rock in any direction. The opposite end of the driving-axle S is fitted with an ordinary universal joint, and the axle casing is made conical, having the larger and outer end attached to the frame A. The slot in the frame A may be covered with leather, canvas, or like material to exclude dust. In the case of side-chain driven cars, there is no slot in the frame A, the secondary axle is rigidly fixed to the cross-bar F, and the frame is fixed directly to the main axle.
