Abstract

1394. Neyret, J. Jan. 31, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Shaft couplings ; shafts and shafting; universal joints. - Relates to an elastic coupling, particularly applicable to motor road vehicles, which allows sufficient play to permit of dispensing with universal joints &c. The driving -shaft a carries a drum b, which is connected to the sleeve c fixed on the driven sbaft d by a number of leaf springs e, which may be of the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 5 or of some intermediate shape. Fig. 3 shows an oscillating support f, carrying a bearing g for the shaft d leading to the differential gearing. The support is carried by the horizontal shaft h, h<1>, mounted in longitudinal bearers i. The elastic transmission means may be applied to the rear wheels. In this case, the drum b is bolted to spokes j on the wheel, which is then driven from the axle l through the springs e, the nave of the wheel being mounted on a tubular support m co-axial with the axle shaft l. As shown in Fig. 6, the wheel may be set at an inclination to the vertical and to the back axle, the flexional strains produced thereby being absorbed by the springs e. In this arrangement, the hub p of the wheel rotates around the sleeve r, which is externally cylindrical with a cylindrical bore set at appropriate obliquity thereto. The sleeve r is passed on to the tubular part m, and is arranged so that the horizontal and oblique axes XX, YY respectively intersect in the plane of che leaf springs e.
