Abstract

26,395. Masham, S. Cunliffe, Baron, fexecutor of Masham, S. Cunliffe, Baron]. Dec. 18. Moulding grain and meal-Grain is first rough ground between rollers and then pressed into cakes by suitable compressing apparatus, steam being blown into the feed-pipe to sterilize the ground material. The compressing - apparatus comprises two bottomless boxes b reciprocated over a table by a cylinder and ram c. The middle part a of the table is solid, but the end parts a<1> are open and form guides for the boxes b. The compressing-ram d closes the end of the feed-tube when in its lower positions, and also actuates a slide in the tube. A measured quantity falls into the boxes as the ram rises, and is compressed as it descends. The ram then rises sufficiently to allow the first box b to be replaced by the other, and the operation is repeated. The cakes are discharged on to an endless band h by pushers g. In a modification, the feed is duplicated and is non-automatic, each feed consisting of two slides operated by a handle. By this arrangement, several cakes can be made in each box, the charges being separated by metal plates. Two rams are provided to move the boxes, and two more to discharge the cakes.
