Generators or producers.-The grate of a producer, or furnace used in connexion with gas retorts, consists of a series of flat bars b, or drip-plates, arranged beneath the charging-aperture a so as to overlap. The bars rest on projections c and may be all horizontal; or the upper bars may slope towards the fire and the lower ones in the opposite direction, so that any water delivered through the aperture a will be led to the ash-pit. The grate is open to the air.
