Abstract

17,402. Stern, H., and Engisch, G. Aug. 28. Primary batteries. -The elements are suspended in a well or the like a, which is lined with masonry or formed of earthenware pipes, the constantly renewed underground water, containing carbonic acid, acting as exciting-liquid. The carbons c, in the form of plates, are provided with lugs e by means of which they are mounted on rods f with spacing-tubes g. T h e zincs d are mounted similarly, and, if desired, a container h, of perforated sheet metal or other suitable material, for holding a supply of electrolytic salt such as sal ammoniac, may be attached to the framework b, with intervening porcelain sockets i. A transom, insulated from the rods f, enables the whole to be suspended from a chain. These elements may be used with a switching-device described in Specification No. 17,402A, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Electricity, Regulating &c.]. Other electrodes other than those of zinc and carbon may be used. The electrodes may be perforated, ribbed, &c.
