Abstract
16,074. Gardiner. W. C. Aug. 5. Impact-wheels. - A multiple-expansion impact wheel of the kind described in Specification No 15,635, A.D. 1902, is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The shaft A carries a series of wheels C' of progressively increasing diameter, or breadth, or both. Each wheel is divided into sections c<1> by partitions d<1>. The buckets E may be of uniform width, or the bucket may have inclined, curved, or zigzag sides E<1>, Fig. 6, projecting regularly or irregularly towards the centre and forming there one or more nozzle-like constrictions. The lower part of the casing encloses the wheels loosely so as to form a channel H connecting the exhaust passages G and so increasing the action of the steam on the wheel. The channel may have constrictions h or be of uniform width. The steam passages F are wide and are controlled by rocking sector admission and reversing valves J on a common shaft K. The valves and steam passages are divided into sections corresponding to the wheels. The wheel chambers are connected up in series by duplicate exhaust passages G, and the passages not in use act as eddy chambers. The valves are fitted with removable shoes o which are renewed when worn.
