Stuffing - b o x e s, substitutes for. - The baffling - rings used on the shafts, dummy pistons, glands, and other parts of turbines and turbine pumps and compressors are made with grooves or slots to permit; of the passage of any grit carried by the steam or other fluid. These slots may be made in the ends or sides of the rings or in the shaft. Figs. 2 and 5 show examples of the baffling-rings used, the slots being indicated at g, t. The rings are made with a foot which is caulked into a groove in the shaft. A caulking-strip k, Fig. 2<c>, may be used along with this foot.
