Abstract

13,697. Lewis, R., and Vincent, G. July 3. Cranks ; mounting cranks on shafts.-The cranks of a motor-cycle or bicycle are so mounted that they may be brought into similar positions when the machine is being driven by the motor or in free-wheeling. The bent crank B on the side remote from the chain-wheel is loosely mounted upon the spindle, but is normally connected thereto by the engagement of a spring-mounted pawl I upon a cup H with a notch M upon the crank boss. In bringing both cranks into similar positions, this loose crank is held stationary, while the other is pressed slightly forwards to pull the pawl out of the notch. The loose crank may then be turned backwards through a semicircle. In this motion a block 0 upon the crank boss is carried round, tensioning a spring N. On the pressure upon the loose crank being released, this crank is turned forward by the spring until the block 0 engages a block P upon the cup and the pawl I enters the notch. The pawl is enclosed in a casing K. The crank is provided with ball bearings D having adjustable cups E and a backing nut F. A locking- nut G retains the cup H upon a tapering portion of the spindle.
