Metallurgical furnaces.-Smelting and other furnaces are constructed of very thick metal blocks or sections, so that the inner surface will not be destroyed by excessive heat, nor yet become too cold to affect the charge. The sections 2, 3 may be cast or wrought iron, steel, or copper ; they are fitted together by means of tongues and grooves 4, and held by bolts 5, 6. The furnace may be surrounded with an air-jacket 7 or a water-jacket.
