Abstract

8321. Sangster, C. T. B. April 19. Gas and like engines.- Crank-chambers of engines for the propulsion of motor-cars &c. are provided with an integral tray or platform rigidly attached to the car frame, the object being to exclude dust from the working parts of the engine, and to provide a convenient support for accessories. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section. The crank-box is formed in two sections a, b, separated horizontally and secured by bolts. Each section is provided with half-bearings a', b<1> for the crankshaft, and chambers c may be provided to contain the gear-wheels for driving the valve-operating shafts. The upper section of the crank-box supports the cylinders, and has cast in one piece with it a platform f, strengthened by webs f<1>, and provided with flanges g for bolting to the car frame. The platform may be used to support the carburettor, the magneto and other appurtenances and the spaces between the underside of the tray and the webs f<1> may be used as tanks for lubricating oil, water, or the like, or as tool boxes.
