2340. Hussey, J. Feb. 6. Shocks, preventing.-Float valves, stop valves, &c. are constructed so as to prevent concussion or hammering by fitting the valve-spindle f with a piston i, as shown. A spring or elastic cushion j, say of india-rubber, is inserted between the piston i and the end h of the piston chamber. The valve is opened by the pressure, on the end of the piston, of a quick-thread screw k actuated by a float arm m, or a lever, or otherwise.
