Motors, alternating-current. - In a single-phase compensated alternating-current commutator motor, three brushes only are employed, which, in a bipolar scheme, are set at angles of approximately 120 degrees with one another. Two of the brushes B<2>, B<3> are short-circuited and so arranged that the field of the stator S is almost entirely neutralised. The stator current is led into the rotor winding through the third brush B<1>, producing a rotor field at right-angles to that of the stator. The speed and power-factor of the motor may be varied by shifting the positions of the brushes.
