Abstract
29,217. Griffith, P. G. Dec. 31. Liquids, sterilizing. - Relates to apparatus for carrying out the process described in Specification No. 17,984, A.D. 1904, for sterilizing water by heating it for a short period to a temperature of 65‹-85‹ C. In a chamber alpha is a series of flattened pipes b opening into chambers e, e' at the top and bottom of the chamber. Corrugated sheet copper may be placed in the spaces between the pipes b. Above the chamber a is a tank j, which the water to be treated enters through a ball cock j<1> and thence passes by a pipe f to the chamber e<1> and then through the pipes b, the chamber e, and the pipe g to the heater. This consists of concentric cylinders k<1>, k<2>, k<3>, k<4>, the innermost of which may be corrugated, forming water chambers k<5>, k<6> communicating by pipes k<7> and separated by spaces up which pass the hot air &c. from the lamp u, escaping by the openings k<3>. The water passes into a chamber l, which is provided with a cock o for the escape of air &c., and thence by a pipe h, which is provided with an upward extension and opening h<2> for the escape of steam, to the chamber alpha, where it is cooled by the cold water in the pipes b, and out by the pipe i, which extends sufficiently high to ensure the chamber a remaining full. The opening n leading from the chamber l to the pipe h is closed by a valve r and spring s connected by a stirrup q to a thermostatic capsule p. When the water has reached the desired temperature, the expansion of the capsule p opens the valve rand allows it to escape. The lamp u is preferably of the type in which petroleum vapour is forced into the burner by air pressure ; to prevent overheating, a thermostat z is provided, which when it expands opens a valve x in a pipe v communicating with the lamp, thus releasing the pressure and extinguishing the lamp. The liquid in the capsule z may be distilled water or liquid boiling at a rather higher or lower temperature as may be required. The water may be driven into the apparatus by a pump, and may pass through an asbestos bag, a layer of charcoal, or other filtering-medium.
