Abstract

4903. Pirrie, W., and Pirrie, N. March 6. Liquids, sterilizing. - Figs. 1 and 3 show apparatus for sterilizing liquids in which the supply of heat and liquid is automatically regulated. The liquid to be sterilized enters by a pipe f and passes through pipes j to alternate concentric cylinders m, where it is warmed while passing upward by the sterilized liquid which is descending in the intermediate cylinders. The liquid is collected at the top by pipes k, and passes through a pipe n to the bottom of a heated chamber a, where it is sterilized. The sterilized liquid passes through a pipe o to the cylinders m, where it is cooled by the unsterilized liquid, and finally passes through pipes g and p and a regulator A to the escape pipe. The chamber a is heated by a burner b, the hot gases passing as shown through a jacket to the chimney c. The regulating-arrangement is shown separately in Fig. 3, and consists of a flexible chamber q which is connected by a pipe r to a tube s immersed in the liquid being sterilized, so that the pressure of the vapour of liquid contained in the tube s may, when the temperature rises, inflate the chamber q, thus opening a liquid supply valve t against the action of a spring u and partially closing a gas regulating-valve w. A fali in temperature reverses this operation. According to the Provisional Specification, the thermostatic regulator may consist of a vessel immersed in the heated liquid and filled with an expansible fluid, the vessel being in communication with a receiver so that, when a portion of the liquid has been expelled by excessive heat, the vessel rises and actuates the regulating-valves.
