25,084. Lehwess, E. E. Nov. 18. Motor road vehicles.-Comprises a valve gear, a change-speed gear, and a friction clutch, all designed to effect smooth working during change of speed. The valve gear is shown in Fig. 1. The hollow shaft n actuated by the spur-wheel q carries cams r, which can be moved in a longitudinal slit by the internal shaft u to which they are pinned. This inner shaft is moved by hand power applied to a system of levers. The throw of the valve is thus controlled, and the action is made almost dead-beat by differential springs k, m. The change-speed gear has an axially-moving sleeve carrying spur-wheels moving on a shaft on the section shown in Fig. 6, thus securing more uniform strength and less liability to bend or spring when engaging. The friction clutch or coupling is seen in Fig. 5. It grips a flanged pulley 17 keyed to the shaft 16 by the action of a spring 19. but can be drawn out of contact by a lever 20. A ball bearing is provided to lessen friction when the clutch is disconnected and the shaft 16 is running idle.
