Abstract

24,535. Wheeler, P. Nov. 12. Omnibuses; doors, opening and closing.-Relates to means for opening and closing the sliding doors of Pullman and like railway cars, tramcars, omnibuses, and other vehicles. The doors are operated by an attendant by means of an arrangement of wires, cords, or chains and pulleys, preferably arranged so that the movement of the operating- handle is less than that of the door. In one arrangement, shown in elevation and plan in Figs. 1 and 3 respectively, the top of the door 13 is connected to a horizontal cord 12, which passes round fixed guide-pulleys 18, 19, 21 and also round two multiplying-pulleys 9, 10, and has its ends connected to fixed points. The pulleys 9, 10 are connected to the ends of a cord 2, which passes round guide-pulleys 4, 5, 6 and is provided with operating-handles 23, 24, by the raising or lowering of which the door can be opened or closed. The pulley 4 is provided with a tensioning-screw 25. The pulleys 9, 10 may be dispensed with, the cord 12 being connected directly to the cord 2. The cord 12 is preferably connected to the door by a lever 27, Fig. 13, pivoted at 29 and formed with an arm 28 engaging a spring catch 34 for holding the door closed. When the cord or chain 12 is pulled to open the door, the arm 28 is lifted over the catch. In a modification, shown in plan in Fig. 7, the multiplication is obtained by means of a lever 44, connected to the door 13 at 45, and formed with a slot 51 engaging a pin on a sliding block 47 connected to the cord 2, and with another slot 54 engaging a fixed pin 52. In another modification, shown in Fig. 11, chains and sprocketwheels 57, 58 are used to obtain the multiplication. The chain 2 may be operated by a sprocket-wheel 56, Fig. 8, and a handle 55 instead of by the handles 23, 24, Fig. 1. The part of the chain 2 working round the wheel 58, Fig. 11, is connected to the part working round the pulleys 5, 6 and the wheel 56, Fig. 8, by suitable joints 66, Fig. 11*. The pulley 19, Fig. 7, may be mounted on a lever adjusted by a set-screw for tightening the chain.
