Abstract

19,355. Whysall, J. Sept. 8. Lancashire &c. boilers; feedwater, heating and purifying ; scum apparatus settling-chambers ; water-circulation, promoting.-To increase the watercirculation, to heat and purify the feedwater, and to collect and remove the scum in steam generators, an internal settling-chamber is provided, and is connected with Galloway tubes, the feedwater supply, and the scum collectors. Figs. 1 and 2 show the arrangement in connection with a Lancashire boiler. The settling-chamber 1 is placed between the flues 2, 3 and is fitted with internal baffles to impede the water proceeding from the inlet 4 to the outlet 5. Connected with this chamber is another 13, divided into three passages, the central one being for the admission of feedwater through the pipe 17, and the side ones for the admission of scum collected by the funnels 18. The funnels are either fixed, or pivoted to allow them to rise and fall with the level of water by means of attached floats. Circulation is increased by connecting the inner end of the chamber 13 with the Galloway tubes 19, which are fitted with the pipes 21. The out-going water is conveyed by the pipe 11 and tubes 12 to the lower part of the boiler, and a blow-off pipe 9 is fitted to the bottom of the settling-chamber. The Provisional Specification states that a scraper operated from the outside of the generator could be provided for cleaning the exterior of the chamber 13.
