Abstract

16,488. North, W. A., Freer, H. H., and Hind, W. H. July 26. Cutting-machines for leather &c.-Relates to cutting-out presses, such, for instance, as are used in the manufacture of boots and shoes. An arm 4, revolubly mounted on ball bearings 10 between collars 9 on a vertically-reciprocating standard 3, is adapted to work in co-operation with a fixed cutting-block 5, which is supported on the bed 7 of the machine, to press the cutting-knife through the material. A plurality of arms 4 may be mounted on the same standard, and a corresponding or other number of work-supports are arranged around a central frame supporting the standard as shown in Fig. 4. The standard 3, which can be adjusted relatively to the bed of the machine by turning a hand-wheel 14, is actuated by an eccentric 11 mounted on a countershaft 12 which is driven by spur gearing from the main shaft 18. Any well-known form of pedal-andclutch mechanism may be employed for throwing the driving-gear out of action after each stroke of the standard 3 and when the latter is in its raised position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the shaft 18 carries a loose, continuouslyrotating pulley 19, which can be made to drive the shaft by depressing a treadle 26 so as to force the V-shaped rim of a friction wheel 20, which is carried by an arm 23 keyed to the treadle shaft 24, between the boss of the pulley and a collar on the shaft. The shaft 18 is also fitted with a brake drum 27 which is partially encircled by a band 28 connected to the treadle 26. When the latter is depressed, the brake is taken off, and a cam fixed on the countershaft 12 holds the treadle depressed during the greater part of each revolution. As the shaft approaches the completion of a revolution, the treadle is released and raised gradually by springs 32 to throw the friction wheel 20 out of gear and at the same time apply the brake.
