Be it known that I, FRANKL1N J. PERKINS, a citizen of the United. States, residing in W oburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fleshing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a machine for treating hides and skins, and is especially adapted for fleshing the same.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient machine of the class described with which a hide or skin can be fleshed in a continuous manner without the necessity of the operator reversing the skin,
as now commonly practiced in the operation of fleshing. For this purpose I employ a plurality of work-supports and a plurality of 0perating-tools, toward and from l which said work-supports are bodily movable, and a pinch or feed roll intermediate, said work-supports and cooperating therewith to feed the hide or skin into and out of the machine, as will be described. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claimsat the end of this specification.

The machine herein shown as embodying this invention is provided with a plurality of operating-tools, herein shown as two in number and comprising bladed cylinders or rolls a b, journaled in boxes 0, pivotally mounted Serial No. 175,611. (No model.)
operating cylinders or rolls. In the present instance the band or apron 7' cooperates with the cylinder or roll a, and the band or apron 7t" cooperates with the cylinder or roll 6. The band or apron j is passed about rollers m n, the roller m being journaled in boxes 0, pivotally supported by hangers or supports p, having threaded stems or rods g, which extend through the front portion of the side frames 0 f and are secured in their adjusted position by the nuts 7*, and the roll a is j ournaled in boxes 10, which are adjustably secured in side frames or supports 12, pivotally mounted on a roll 13, which is journaled in suitable boxes sup ported, as herein shown, by a bracket or arm 14:, attached to the side frame 0, and by an upright 15, secured to the side frame f by the cross-bar 16. (See Fig. 1.) The endless band or apron his passed about rolls 17 18, journaled in boxes 19 20, adjustably supported. in the side frames 12, the endless band 70 passing under'the roll 13, which may be made plane or fluted and which has the function of a feed roll. The roll 13 is located between the endless bands 3' k and cooperates with both, as will be described.
The side frames or rocking supports 12 are adapted to be rocked about the feed-roll 13 as a center, so as to alternately move the endless bands 1' is toward and away from their cooperating cylinders a b, for a purpose as will be described, and this result may be accomplished, as herein shown, by connecting the movable side frames 12 on the opposite Sides of their center by means of links 21 22 with cranks or arms 23 24 on a rock-shaft 25, supported by the framework of the machine. The rock-shaft 25 may be rotated in opposite directions from the front of the machine, as

The shaft 32 of the feed-roll 13 may and preferably Will constitute the main or driving shaft of the machine, and in the present instance said shaft is shown as provided with two normally loose pulleys 33 34, which are rotated in opposite directions in any suitable manner, as by straight and cross belts, (not shown,) and said pulleys are adapted to be rendered fast on the shaft 32 by a clutch sleeve or member 35, which cooperates with clutch-hubs 36 37 on the said pulleys. The clutch-sleeve 35 is adapted to be moved in opposite directions by a cam-hub 38, fast on the rock-shaft 25 and provided with a cam-groove 39 in its periphery, into which extends the lower end of a lever 40, pivotally connected at its upper end with the clutch-hub 35. The bladed cylinders I) are rotated in opposite directions at a substantially high speed, and for this purpose they are provided with the belt-pulleys 41 4:2. The endless belt or apron j is driven-from the main shaft 32 by a link chain &3, which is passed over a sprocket- .wheel 4A onthe shaft of the roll in and about a sprocket-wheel on the shaft 32 of the roll 13. The endless belt or apron 71/ is driven from the main shaft 32, which for this purpose is provided with a gear 45, which meshes shafts of the rolls 17.18. The pulley 33 may be designated the forward pulley and the pulley 34 the reverse pulley.
The machine may be provided, as shown, with a delivery board or table 46, which is located below the endless belt is and inclined toward the rear of the machine.
The operation of the machine herein shown may be briefly described as follows: The hide or skin to be treated is placed by the operator upon the endless bed or apron j when the latter is in its lowered position. The operator depresses the treadle 27, which rocks the shaft 25. a sufficient distance to cause the cam-groove 35 into engagement with the hub 36 of the pulley 33, and thereby render said pulley fast on the driving-shaft 32, setting the latter in motion and effecting movement or travel of the endless beds or aprons j 71 through the The endless bed carries the hide orskin with it and between it and the feed-roll 13, which in turn what maybe regarded as the inner end of the hide between said feed-roll and the bed 71:, thereby causing the hide to be wrapped about the feed-roll, so as to obtain the desired grip of the feed-roll on the hide or skin. \Vhen the hide or skin is gripped by the feed-roll 13, the operator further depresses the treadle 27 and rocks the shaft 25, so as to bring the hide or skin on the bed j into engagement with the knife-cylinder a, which fleshcs or otherwise treats the portion of the hide subsequently presented to it by the bed j. \Vhen the hide or skin has been fed beyond the knife-cylindern, and sufficiently far so that its outer end passes out of engagement with the bed or apron and falls upon the bed Zr, the operator releases the treadle 27 and depresses the treadle 26, which rocks the shaft 25 in the opposite direction and through the mechanism above described moves the bed away from the cylinder (1/ and moves the bed Z: toward the'knife-cylinder b and into the position shown in Fig. 4, the clutch 35 being also moved to release the pulley 33 and engage the pulley 34, which rotates the feed-roll 13 in the reverse direction and causes the endless bed Z: to be moved in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow 50, thereby reversing the movement of the hide or skin, which is fed onto the inclined table 46 and is discharged out of the machine at its rear side. As the hide or skin is fed in the reverse direction it is subjected to the action of the knife-cylinder Z), which fleshes or otherwise treats that portion which was not treated by the cylinder (1. The cam-groove 39 is provided with a circular portion 55, (see Fig. 1,) which permits the rock-shaft 25 to be rocked still further after the clutch 35 has been engaged with the pulley 33.
From the above description it will be seen that the operator is relieved from considerable labor, as he is not required to handle the hide or skin after it is placed on the belt or endless bed 1'. Furthermore, the reversal of the direction of movement of the hide or skin is effected from the same side of the machine on which the operator starts the machine in operation.
I have herein shown the movable work-supports in the form of endless beds or aprons, and while I may prefer this construction I do not desire to limit my invention to the particular form of work-support shown.
The machine may and preferably will be provided with bonnets or guards 60 for the knife-cylinders, which bonnets may be pivotally secured to the side frames 0 f, as herein shown.

combination, a plurality of operating-tools, a plurality of work-supports cooperating there with and movable bodily toward and from said tools, and means to simultaneously effect bodily movement of said work-supports in opposite directions with relation to said operating-tools, means to effect travel of said work supports in opposite directions, and a feed- 'roll cooperating with said worksupports and located intermediate thereof, substantially as.
described.
4. In a machine of the class described, in, combination, a plurality of rotatable operating-tools, means to rotate said tools in opposite directions, traveling work-supports movable toward and from said operating-tools, meansto move one of said traveling work supports toward its cooperatingoperatingtool and to simultaneously move the other of said work-supports away from its cooperating operating-tool, and means to effect travel of said work-supports in opposite directions,
substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a movable work-support, an operating-tool cooperating therewith 'to treat a portion of the hide or skin as the latter is moved in one direction into the machine, a
second movable work-support to receive the hide or skin from the first-mentioned worksupport, an operating-tool cooperating with said second work-support to'treat the portion of the hide or skin which is unactedupon by the operating-tool cooperating with the firstmentioned work-support and as the hideor skin is moved in a reverse direction, and means to effect a reversal of movement of the hide or skin on its travel through said machine, substantially as described.
6. In a machine of the class described, in
combination, a movable work-support to move the hide or skin into the machine, a second movable work-support to receive the hide or skin from the first-mentioned work-support,
-means;to reverse the movement of said sec- 0nd work-s pport to efiecta reversal of. movement of the hide or skin while in the machine,- and means to treat the hide or skin while on said work-supports, substantially as described.
