Abstract
15,459. Smith, F. E. Aug. 13, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Cranes.-Consists of a portable traction or selfpropelled crane having hoisting and traction gearing driven by an internal-combustion engine through clutches, and fitted with a foundation of special shape provided with steering-wheels. Fig. 2 shows a side view, and Fig. 4 an end view with the standards removed. The hoisting drum 8 and the driving-axle 3 are driven from a vertical shaft 13 through clutches 25, 18 respectively, which are connected together, by means of a rod 32 and compound lever 31, so that, when one is in, the other is out, and vice versÔ. The shaft 13 is driven through a reversing bevel clutch 15 by the motor 7 mounted on extensions of the jib standards. The drum 8 and the above-described gearing are mounted in the jib standards. The foundation 1 is of Y-form, and in its two extremities are mounted the steering-wheels 4 in pivoted brackets operated through worm and chain gearing from a shaft connected by worm gearing with the steering-shaft 47. The clutch handles 33, 30 and the steering-wheel 48 are all within easy reach of the operator.
