Abstract

Vehicle fittings; jib cranes.-A detachable crane, conveniently constructed of built-up channel bars, is supported in a rotary footstep bearing on a motor vehicle either in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, or in that shown by dotted lines. In either case it is braced by inclined back stays or legs 45 made of iron frames stiffened with wooden joists. A hand winch 55 on the post serves to luff the jib by means of the rope 44. A handle within reach of the driver must be moved to disengage a pawl from an ordinary gear wheel, before the jib can be lowered. The winding-gear is driven by gearing operated by the propelling motor of the vehicle and controlled from the driver's seat. The gearing comprises a chain drive 2, 4, arranged on a shaft projecting from the gear-box, or on the motor shaft 53, which drives a longitudinal shaft 5 connected to the drum 20 through spur and bevel gear. The drum, shafts, and gearing are located beneath the vehicle body so as not to interfere with the carrying space. A sliding toothed wheel 14 for disconnecting the gear, and a spring band brake 23 are operated from levers 30, 31 respectively, also arranged for operation from the driver's seat and furnished with the usual setting- and-retaining mechanism. The crane can be mounted upon a tractor vehicle for manipulating goods carried by a trailer.
