Abstract
14,833. Deprez, M., and Verney, J. July 1. Vertical boilers superheaters, steam ; steam separators.-A vertical multitubular boiler is constructed with an enlarged chamber at the top, in which is placed a steam separator or a superheater. In the modification shown in Fig. 1, a battery of smoke tubes c, which run up through the steam space, is enclosed by a jacket f which extends almost up to the normal water level. Holes f<1> in this partition serve to promote the water-circulation, the space below them forming a quiescent region for the deposition of sediment. In the lower part of the enlarged chamber b, another annular partition i, perforated at the bottom, is placed, and rests on the shoulder formed at the enlargement. The top of this partition extends above the water-line, and hence provides outside it a region of undisturbed water-surface. The upper part of the flue-tubes is surrounded by a jacket c\ and this in turn is partially enclosed by a perforated casing c<2>, the former being fitted internally with baffles t, Fig. 2, to lengthen the path of the steam, admitted This part of the boiler may be through the perforations in the casing, among the smoke tubes. This part of the boiler may be modified by causing the steam to pass downwards through tubes which surround the smoke tubes through the depth of the jacket c'. The steam then passes into one of two tubes c<3>, which fit loosely in the pieces b<2> and communicate, through cocks, directly with the steam-supply pipe or indirectly through a superheater or steam separator. By this means, any desired proportion of steam can be taken directly from the boiler. The superheater shown consists of flat boxes j placed in the uptake through which the steam is passed, which are fitted with internal partitions j I and strengthened by stay-tubes j<2>. A suitable separator to be employed instead of the above superheater is shown in section in Fig. 6. The steam enters a cylinderp, which is surrounded nearly throughout its length by a jacket q through which the furnace gases pass, beneath a substantially M-shaped baffle r arranged longitudinally, a perforated steam pipe s being placed above such baffle. The precipitated water returns to the boiler through the drain pipe u. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the water is made to circulate from the interior outwards, instead of vice versÔ as in Fig. 1. The tubes in this form surround the jacket f<1>, which consists of a tubular body mounted on feet v<1>. The steam is collected in a central dome w, and priming is prevented by causing the steam to impinge on the upper ends of the smoke tubes by the action of the diaphragm x. The Provisional Specification states that the furnace described in Specificition No. 26,700, A.D. 1902, [Abridgment Class Furnaces &c.], is particularly applicable to this generator.
