Abstract

14,535. Down, W. E., and Fullard, W. June 28. Printing from engraved plates; embossing. Relates to a wiping-device for plate printing and embossing presses. The wiping-device 17 is reciprocated in ways 16 in the head 15 carrying the inked die 60 by means of links 20, 21 and levers 18, 19, the lever 18 being secured on a rocking shaft 22 actuated by engagement of a lever 23 in a camgroove 24 in a wheel 3 on a shaft 2. The wheel 3 engages with a pinion 5 on a driving-shaft 6. The head 15 is reciprocated by means of rods 13, 14 and crank-wheels 11, 12 on the shaft 2. Paper or its equivalent 25 passes to the wiping-device from a roll supported by the levers 18, 19, and is taken up on a roll 33. In the wiping-device, the paper passes under a clamping-bar 26, over a pad secured to a plate 27, and over rollers 28, 29, 30, 31. The roller 31 rotates in a trough 32 containing liquid for application to prevent drying of the ink and consequent cracking of tbepaper. The links 20, 21 are pivoted to crank arms 44 on a shaft 45 mounted in the wiping-device. The arms 44 are connected by adjustable links to pivoted arms carrying the bar 26. The plate 27 rests on springs 59, which are lifted by cams 58 on shafts 57 rocked by connection of arms 56 with arms 54 on the shaft 45. The arms 54 move freely between the ends of bolts adjustable in lugs on the plate 27. In operation, the plate 27 is moved before the arms 54 come in contact with the bolts to move the wiping-device bodily. The roll 33 is carried on a shaft 34 in the levers 18, 19, and is provided with loose gear-wheels 35 engaging with racks 36, which are maintained in contact with the wheels 35 by springs, and are adapted to slide in blocks 37 pivoted to the main frame 1. Dogs 40 on the wheels 35 engage ratchetwheels on the shaft 34, which is retained by means of another ratchet-wheel and a check pawl 43. In operation, the wheels 35 and racks 36 move together until stops 66 on the racks engage the blocks 37, when the racks cease to advance and the wheels 35 are rotated. A tension device 67 prevents the paper 25 from being drawn off too freely. The paper passes between the bar 26 and a shield or strip on the plate 27, by which means the paper is clamped during the action of the roll 33. The amount of paper taken up by the roll 33 is regulated by adjustment of the distance between the stops 66 and the blocks 37.
