Now referring to the features of the'press more directly relating to and embodying my present invetion, these part are shown in the drawings as follows: In al with and extending longitudinally of t e frame and between and adjacent to the side framev l j members thereof, are two I-beam members the bearing surfaces of the rollers (Fig. 2),
and engage parallel retaining grooves 19b 'formed at opposite sides of the bearing surfaces 19, 19EL of the I-beam members 19. Upon the rollers 20 of these slider frames 20 rests the bed l2; said bedvbeing provided upon its under surface with longitudinal,
`rectangularly formed ribs or projectionsvl2Il having downwardly facing bearing surfaces j engaging the said bearing rollers. The said projections 12a, 1211 are embraced by. the plates 20c, thus preventing any transverse movement of the bed relative to the sliderA frames.
A positive reciprocating movement is imparted to said slider frames by the following means :--The lower lflange vof onegof the I-beam members 19 is provided, along its central portion, with an inwardly projecting extension 22 havin upwardly facing rack teeth 23 formed integral therewith. Upon the under Vsurface ofthe bed 12 andin the plane of the rack teeth 23,is formed a rack bar 24, the saine extending longitudi-v nally of said bed and iiitegral`therewith. Interposed between said rack teeth 23 and the rack bai' 24, is a gear wheel 25. The said gear wheel 25 is relatively mounted upon a Stub shaft 26, the same being secured to a depending web 27 integral-"with the 'inner vertical plate 2Oc of the adjacent slider frame 20. By this construction, driving. force is applied to the reciprocating slider frame, maintaining the same always ,in the same relation to the bed; the intermeshing of the gear wheel 25 with the .mov-
able rack bar 24; of the reciprocating bed 12 and with the stationary rack -teeth 23 acting to imparta positive movement to the slider frame. The direction of movement of the slider frames will at all times correspond to the direction of movement of the bed, but
the rate of travel of said slider frames will be one-half that ofthe bed.
At the end of the press adjacent to the ink fountain 16, are inounted'the liereinbefore mentioned ink-distributing rollers 14 and/'14. The said rollersare composed of the' soft material ordinarily used in the printing art in the manufacture of inking rollers, and said rollers extend transversely of the frame, in such position as to engage the surface of the ink table as the same passes beneath them. The roller journals 30n and 30b of the rollers 142L and 14h, respectively, are mounted in bearings 31, 31, secured to the side frame members. The bearings 31 at the adjacentends of the jour nals are preferably of the open type, to be hereinafter more fully described, and the bearings at the opposite ends of the journals are preferably of the ordinary plain or closed type. The roller journals 3()a and 30" are of a length slightly greater than the distance between the bearings, thus permitting a limited degree of endwise movement of the rollers. The said open type of bearings provided at the adjacent' ends of the distri u ting rollers permits a free vertical movement of one end of each roller in'an upward direction relative to the i'nktable. In order that an initial rotation iray be inparted to the rollers, prior to their contact with the ink table, devices are provided as follows: I A horizontal arm 33 is rigidly secured to the slider frame 20 ,which is located at the 'side ofthe press 4adjacent to the vends of thei rollers provided with ,the open type of bearings 31. Said arm extends forward from r-t'lie slider frame and is located substantially in the same lhorizontal plane with the re,- ciproc-.iting bed. ' The extreme forward portion of the said arm is provided witlian elongated block or' shoe 35 having an upwardly facing surface which is horizontal at its central part and slightly inclined downwardly at its-ends. A layer of leather or similar friction in'- creasing material 85 is applied to the surface of the shoe. The slight raising of the rollers within the open bearings 31, rmits the forward margin of the ink ta le 13 tov pass freely beneath' the distributing rollers without contact therewith. Immediately upon the passage of the forward mar 'n of the'ink table beneath the said rollers, t e same are ally lowered into contact with the sur ace of the ink table by the passage of the horizontal portion of the frictional surface of the shoe from beneath the collars 36a and 36b and the vcontact of the rollers with the downwardly inclined end portion of the surface of the shoe. When the ink table reaches the position shown in Fig. 3, the same has passed beneath both of the distributing rollers, the roller 14 is resting entirely upon the ink table and the .roller 14h is about to be released b the shoe 85. In this position of the parts, t e ductor roller has been swung upward in position to engage the transfer roller 37, and to come in contact with the ink table; The ink is thus transmitted directly to the ink table by the' contact of the ductor roller with the ink table, as well as indirectly through the medium of the distributing rollers 14, 14b and the intermediate transfer roller 37. The ink will be distributed upon or over the surface of the ink table by the action of the distributing rollers as the table passes thereunder. In Fig. 4, the bed and ink table are shown as having reached the outer end of their path of movement, and at the commencement of their rcturn movement. The reversal of direction of' movement of the bed and inl: table is accompanied bv a swinging movement 'if tbc ductor roller 15 to its original position in contact with the ink fountain roller 40, the saidductor roller beingr actuated by the cam member and intermediate links and leversT N, so that the same is lifted from the ink table at substantially the sai/ne time that the movemen/tof the'ink tablpf'in the opposite direction/begins. By th arrangement, the duptr/ roller does no remain in contact with aduthe ink table during any portion of its return travel or movement toward the forminking rollers. 1
The advantage gained by the employment of the actuating devices described for the ductor roller, may best be understood from the following: In printing presses 'of this type it is the usual practice to control the quantity of ink applied to the lnk table by varying the area of the ductor roller surtherewitln a quantity of ink in the form of astri extending longitudinally of the ductor ro ler, said strip being of greater or less width depending on the extent of rotation l imparted to the ink fountain roller during the time the ductor roller remains in contact with saidv fountain roller. When, therefore, the duetor roller is swung upward into contact with the transfer roller and with the ink table, a portion of the ink will be transferred to the surface of the said transfer roller in the form of a strip of corresponding width. By reason of the relatively small diameter of the said transfer' roller, the strip of inl( will cover a greater or less portion of the surface of the transfer roller, according to the width of the strip transferred. The contact of the said transfer roller with the adjacent distributing roller results in a further transfer of the strip v'of ink, and.l by reason of the large diameter of the said distributingaroller relatively to that of the transfer roller, a further distribution of the'ink will take place, in thc .coaction of the transfer roller with the surface of the distributing roller. The distributing roller in turn transfers and dis.
tributes the ink upon the ink table by its engagement therewith. A Iportion of the stri p olf ink upon the surface-,of ythe ductor roller will be transferred directly to the ink table by thu rotative or rolling' contact of the d uetor roller therewith, and at each revolution of the ductor roller a strip of ink will be applied to the ink table, extending entirely across the same. It will,thercfore, be apparent that the distribution of ink upon the ink table byitsy direct contact with the duetorroller is accomplished by the application to the ink table ofj'a plurality of parallel strips of ink. In the return uioveiufjnt of the ink table, the effect of suliscoucntly retaining the ductor roller Iin vcontact with the table, will be a tendency irrtlic rluf'tor roller to pick up or remove a, portion ol ilu: ink already applied to the ini: table. This be slightly ilu-lined from a line at right an-` l gles to the side frame member of the press.
This laterul adjustment is accomplished bv f a looseningr of the bolt 52 and a shifting oif the block 50. .This operation will necessltate a slight rotative movement of the yoke 54 relative to the block, particularly in cases where the bearing at the opposite end of the roller journal :is not shifted to a like extent. The loose 'mountin of the stem 57 Within the block 50, permits this necessary movement, as does also the diameter of the bore 57 of the lug', which allows free rotative movement of the stud 58 therein. The bearing of the collar and spring washer against the lug holds the yoke 54 in position, after the same is adjusted. The vertical ad'ustment of the bearing is accomplish by merely raising orlowering the stud relative to `the bearing block. This improved form of bearing permits an accurate and convenlent adjustment of the rollers.
It is to be understood that the devices herein illustrated and described may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, and 'I do not, therefore, desire to be limited to the construction set forth. except so far as pointed out in the appended claims. A
I claim as my invention:
1. In a printing press', the combination of a reciprocating ink table, a distributing roller, a movable member having recipro catorv movement upon the frame and movi ingthereon at a less speed than that of the reciprocating ink table, said member being provided with africtional bearing surface adapted to act on said distributing roller to impart rotative movement thereto.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a reciprocating. bed, 'an ink table moving with said bed, a distributing roller provided with a friction surface, a slider frame, and a plurality of rollers mounted on said slider frame and supporting said reciprocating bed; said slider frame being provided with a frictional .bearing surface adapted-to engage said friction surface of said roller Ine printing press, the combination with the press frame, of a reciprocatin ink table, a distributing roller, a slider ame mounted on the press frame and supporting the reciprocatim;` ink table, said slider frame having reciproca tory movement at a less speed than that of the ink table and being 'provided with a frictional bearing surface `adapted to act on said distributing roller to impart rotative movement thereto.
4. In a printing press, the combination of a reciprocating bed, an ink table moving with said bed, a distributing roller provided with an annular friction surface materially smaller in diameter than lsaid distributing roller, a slider frame, anti-friction rollers mounted on the slider frame and su porting said reciproeatin bed; said slider rame being provided wit a frictional bearing surface adapted to engage said friction surface of saidroller, and driving meansacting to impart positive reciprocatory movement to said slider frame at one-half of the speed of the reciprocating bed.
5. In a printin press, the combination of a reciprocating ed, an ink table mov' with said bed, a distributing roller providld with an axmular friction surface of a diy ameter materially less than that of said distributin roller, a. sliderframe, a plurality of antiiction rollers sup orting said re eiprocating bed and in ro ing engagement with a bearing surface of the press frame, and means for impartin a reciprocate movement to said slider igframe correspon ing in a direction to, and at a s eed materially less than, that of the said ed; said slider frame being provided with an arr` carrying a shoe provided withan upwardly facing, frictional bearing surface adapted to engage said friction surface of said roller and to impart en initial rotative movement to said distributing' roller.
6.
