Abstract

9013. Lake, H. H., [Cottrell & Sons Co., C. B.]. April 19. Planing; stamping.-Relates to a process of evening or levelling the faces of electrotype or stereotype plates. The plate 10 having a more or less uneven surface consisting of prominences such as 11 and depressions such as 12, Fig. 5, is placed face downwards on the bed 16 of a shaving-machine, with a paper &c. matrix or sheet 13 under it. The matrix 13 varies in thickness, the thickest parts 14 corresponding in position with the prominences 11 of the plate, and the thinnest parts 15 with the depressions 12. The back of the plate is then shaved one or more times by passing the cutter 17 over it, and this removes a greater thickness of metal from the parts of the plate supported by the thickened and prominent parts 14, 11, the other parts yielding or springing down under the cutter. The plate having been thus reduced to approximately equal thickness at all* parts, is pressed quite flat between heated plates 19, 20, Fig. 7, of a press, such plates having parallel plane pressuresurfaces.
