Abstract

234. Wood, H. A. W Jan. 6. Stereotype; embossing. - To reduce to a common level the protuberances formed on the back of a stereotype matrix after being pressed on to the forme by the blanket, the blanket is removed and the back of the matrix is subjected to even pressure applied in a plane parallel to the face of the forme so as to spread the protuberances in different directions. When using a platen press, as shown in Fig. 1, the matrix is formed by pressing the moist flong 14 between the forme 11 and blanket 12 by means of a platen 13. The irregular protuberances 15, 16 are then reduced to a common level by removing the blanket 12 and pressing the platen directly on to the matrix, a stop 17 carried by the platen or by the bed 9 limiting the movement of the platen. In a modification, a travelling pressure-roller 20, Fig. 4, is used instead of the platen, and the back of the matrix is levelled by removing the blanket and inserting a hard flat plate 21 in its place. In a further modification, the pressure is applied by means of a rotating disk 25, Fig. 5, vertically adjustable and having a traversing motion over the back of the matrix.
