Abstract

7148. Sommer, F. March 24. Strutting.-A mining-strut of the kind described in Specification No. 23,176, A.D. 1902, consists of two telescopic members, formed in some cases from profile iron bars, adjustably connected by means of a clamping-device which gives under excessive pressure. In Figs. 1 and 2, a cylindrical strut a of wood or metal, or of wood cased with metal, is inserted in a pipe c, and may be adjusted therein by means of a clamping-collar b, resting on the top of the pipe c, and split to receive a tightening-screw d. The member c may be built up of a series of longitudinally-flanged segments riveted together. In Figs. 6 and 7, the telescopic members a, c are made of channel-iron, tie-bands f being secured round the outer member c in order to guide the inner member a, which is adjustably secured by means of a clamping-collar b resting on the top of the member c. Shoes of cast iron or other material may be riveted to the top and bottom of the strut, in order to increase the supporting-surface. The telescopic members may be made from channel-iron, the flanges of the outer members being bent inwards to receive the outwardly-turned flanges of the inner member, tiebands being dispensed with, or the members may be of V-section, the inner member being guided by means of tie-bands riveted to the outer member. In the case of very strong struts, a number of bars may be riveted together to form the telescopic members. In struts made of profile iron, the clamping-collar may be replaced by other clamping- devices.
