SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,772, dated August 9, 1898.
Original application filed July 30, 1897, Serial No. 642,976. Divided and this application filed March 1,1898. Serial No. 672,129. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANN HARMATTA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Szepesvaralja, Austria-Hungary, have invented Improvements in Metal Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists in a metal barrel completely air and liquid tight, light and cheap, and also practical and advantageous to manufacture, said barrel to be not only a substitute for the wooden barrels hitherto in use for shipping oil and petroleum, but also for the cylindrical iron barrels with rivets and solders, as have recently been employed.
The'accompanyin g drawing shows such twopart metal barrel.
The two halves of this metal barrel are provided at their meeting rims or edges with corrugations or screw-threads, which threads are coupled or interlocked with each other at the center, so that the threads lying one upon the other provide a complete and compact joint between the outer and inner parts of the barrel.
The appliances employed in the production of such a barrel form the subject of another patent application, Serial No. 642,976, of July 30, 1897, filed by me and of which the present application is a division. Such a barrel is of great strength without need of the hoops usually employed, as the corrugations which couple the two halves of the barrel supplant the hoops, and, moreover, such a barrel can be made perfectly air-tight and comparatively light in weight.
The corrugations are not only interlocked, but they are compressed into contact with each other and make a perfectly tight joint.
What I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A barrel made up of two sections united by deep screw-threads forming corrugations, said corrugations being compressed laterally or in a direction longitudinally of the barrel, substantially as described.
In witness whereof .I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
J OI-IANN IIARMATTA.
