Abstract
6919. Twynam, G. E., and Daniel, N. March 22. Sweeping-machines; elevating sweepings into receptacles; refuse, collecting.-A motor-driven vacuum apparatus for sweeping up and collecting the liquid mud and refuse on woodpavement and other roads, or for removing mud &c. from gullies, consists of an exhausted tank C, Fig. 1, having at one end a sucker G and a flexible pipe g, through which the mud &c. is drawn into the tank. At the other end is an air pump D for creating a vacuum in the tank, and for forcing air into it in order to discharge the mud &c. through the outlet P. The motor B drives, by means of the toothed wheels j<1>, j<2>, an intermediate shaft j, which, by means of a chain j<3> at one or both ends, drives the wheels a, and also, by means of the chains i<10>, i<3> and the pinions i<7>, i<8>, drives the rotary brush I. The brush sweeps the mud &c. into the path of the sucker G, which runs on small wheels h<1>, and is drawn by a forked frame F. The sides and rear end of the mouth of the sucker G are fitted with rubber or like strips G<1>, and horizontal side rollers enable it to travel close to the kerb. The brush I may be raised by a counterweighted lever l<2>, and may be dropped again by operating a lever connected to the chain m. The air pump is driven by gearing connecting it to the motor B, or, as shown in Fig. 1,. by a steam cylinder e. The air-pump piston d<2>, Fig. 5,is fitted with valves d<3>, and the inlet and outlet valves d<4>, d<5> are connected to a three-way valve e<9>, which enables the pump to force air into the tank. When removing mud from road gullies, the sucker G, Fig. 1, is replaced by a flexible pipe. The tank C is fitted with manhole and mud-hole doors to facilitate cleaning. According to the Provisional Specification, a scraper may be arranged behind the sucker so as to collect and feed the mud &c. to it.
