4999. Holmes, S. Feb. 29. Potato planters.-Relates to an implement for planting one or more rows of potatoes at a time. The frame A is provided with horse shafts D and is carried by two wheels such as C<1> fixed to the main axle B. A series of endless bands M, one for each row to be planted, is mounted on rollers G, K. The rollers G are driven from the axle B by the arrangement of chain and spur gearing shown. A spring clutch, not shown in Fig. 5, may be interposed in the gearing. A series of receptacles or pockets O are secured in the bands M. Hoppers P for the seed' potatoes are mounted on the frame, they are provided with a partition W reaching nearly to the band M which forms the bottom of the hopper, and with a brush f which removes surplus potatoes from the pockets O. The potatoes are discharged by the bands M into tubes T having a hoppershaped mouth V and a share-like projection V<1> for making a groove in the bottom of each furrow into which the potatoes fall. The implement may be provided with shares l for opening up the furrows, and with shares p for covering in the potatoes when planted. The shares l, p are adjustably mounted, and the tubes T may be made telescopic so that the working parts may be raised off the ground to facilitate transport. The Specification states that the machine may be adapted to be worked by a motor.
