Potato and like planters; seeds, sowing.-In a potato &c. planting machine of the conveyer type, the conveyer is arranged transversely instead of longitudinally on the machine and is so guided or arranged that the upper run passes horizontally and immediately in front of the operator's seat, the potatoes, tubers, or other'seed being fed by hand into the pockets thereof. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the conveyer or endless carrier E with pockets formed by plates F, passes across the machine in front of the operator's seat C, a table D being provided for the potato or seed box or hopper. The conveyer runs on guide-pulleys or sprocket wheels, one of which is driven by gearing I from the main axle J. Variable-speed gear may be introduced to vary the spacing of the seed and a tension pulley may be arranged to take up the slack of the conveyer. The axle J may be disconnected from the driving-wheels B by a clutch. The wheels B may be adjustable to correspond with the distance apart of the furrows. The horse shafts M also may be adjustable or the machine may be motor-driven. The vertical stretch of the conveyer is wholly or partly enclosed by a shoot H, having an inturned lip at its lower end. A share O is provided for making a groove or drill in the bottom of the furrow, and breast members or coulters P for turn. ing the soil back into the groove. Two or more conveyers may be provided depositing the potatoes &c. into the same or different drills.
