4564. Stott, W. Feb. 24. Carding-engines.-A traverse motion, for use in the production of cross-wound cheeses or rolls of sliver in condenser carding-engines, is constructed so that the speed of traverse shall be in a constant ratio to the speed of revolution of the winding- roller, thus maintaining a constant distance of traverse for each revolution of the winding-roller as the cheeses increase in size. The traverse bar E supports a bracket e<2> carrying traverse guides e and a roller E<1> which rests upon the winding-roller B, thus maintaining the guides e at a constant distance from the peripheries of the cheeses or rolls. The roller E<1> and guides e are given a longitudinal reciprocating motion by the bar E, which is oscillated by a projection k on the loose washer K engaging in the groove f of the cam F. A train of gear wheels G (or chain or belt gear), on a swinging bracket H, gears with the cam shaft F' and also with the wheel g on the winding-roller, so that the traverse motion is driven direct from the winding-roller.
