4406. Walker, J. Feb. 22. Lay-figure and like stands suitable for dressmakers and capable of being adjusted to any size and shape of figure. Fig. 1 shows a dummy for receiving bodices or linings which have been fitted on the subject on which the outer materials are to be mounted or draped. A core consisting of two telescopic oval tubes A, A' is fixed to a base-plate A<2>, the upper part terminating in an enlarged cap on which are loosely mounted spiral springs A<3>, A<4> forming the shoulder and neck portions respectively. Springs A<5> are placed in front of the core, and in some cases at the sides thereof under the arm-pits and at the hips. The base-plate is provided with a hole for allowing the height of the core to be varied, and is preferably covered with soft material. The model is padded with a mixture of kapok and coco-nut fibre &c. enclosed within an outer skin B sewed or otherwise fastened to the base-plate and provided with hooks and eyes or buttons down either the front or back. A number of outer coverings of different sizes and types are employed to suit different figures. The arms are made in two sections joined at the elbow, each section being divided into compartments, and they are attached to the body piece by the aid of adjustable pins D engaging one of a number of bars E' on metal discs E which are attached to the arm pieces for not more than half their depth. Dummies may be similarly constructed for fitting skirts in addition to, or without, bodices, and also for mens' clothing.
