Speed indicators; odometer. -A centrifugal governor has a sleeve arranged to compress successively springs of increasing strength as the speed rises, and to actuate the indicating pointer. A flexible shaft b, which is attached to a part of the machinery, or carries a friction disc running on one of the wheels, or on the work in the case of a lathe, is coupled to a shaft a. A shaft e, driven by means of a wheel c and pinion d, carries the governor. This consists of masses f connected by arms 31 to a collar g fixed on the shaft, and by arms 32 to a sliding sleeve h, which has a circular rack i gearing with a pinion l on the shaft of the indicating-pointer. A spring n tends to return the pointer to zero, in which position an arm o on the shaft rests against a post p. Springs u, r, q are confined between the sleeve h and collar g, and separated by sliding sleeves s, t. The weak spring u is compressed till the sleeve t rests against the collar g, and similarly for the spring r. A worm v on the shaft a gears with a wheel w, on the shaft of which is a worm gearing with a wheel y. This wheel drives a wheel 1 on the first shaft of the odometer, which consists of a series of parallel shafts carrying number drums visible through openings in the dial. Transmission between successive shafts is effected by means of one-toothed wheels gearing with ten - toothed wheels, except in the case of the first shaft 1, which carries a wheel 7, shown in Fig. 7, having two teeth and a rim of the same height. A wheel of twenty teeth on the next shaft has alternate teeth cut away at one end, and the rim of the wheel 7 takes into the space between pairs of teeth and locks the wheel, except when transmission takes place. A second odometer, which may be re-set at zero when desired, may be provided, in which case a sleeve to which are fixed wheels 8, 28 is mounted frictionally on the shaft 2. The wheel 8 has one tooth and gears with a ten-toothed wheel 21 on the first numberdrum, which is also mounted so as to revolve with friction. Transmission to the second drum is similarly effected. In order to re-set this odometer, a milled head 29, shaft 25, and wheel 27 are pulled outwards against the action of a spring until the wheel 27 gears with the wheel 28.
