Abstract

24,846. Smith, M. H. Nov. 16. Spring wheels; pneumatic wheels; hubs; tyres, pneumatic &c.-Resilient wheels, especially applicable as the driving- wheels of motor cars, are described. The sleeve A, Figs. 2 and 3, fits on to the squared end of the axle, and is formed with a flange B provided with two radial ribs C. Between the sleeve and the hub D are interposed compression springs F, the ends of which are connected to caps E adapted to rock on lugs a, d. A flange H on the hub is provided with two radial ribs at right-angles to the ribs C, and between the flanges B, H is interposed a floating plate K, Fig. 8, having recesses j, j<1> adapted to engage with the ribs on the flanges B, H, respectively. The ends of the hub are closed by ring plates L, M, and the clearance between these plates and the sleeve determines the maximum amount of compression of the springs. The brake ring Z and the driving sprocket-wheel or other mechanism are attached to the sleeve. The springs may be replaced either by compound, plate, or other springs, or by cylinders with plunger pistons, or by india-rubber or other elastic material, or by pneumatic tubes. In the form shown in Fig. 13, the springs S are interposed between outer and inner tyres Y, Z<1>, connection from the outer tyre to the flange H being made by tangent wires X or the like, and the floating plate K being again employed. Building wheels.-When inserting or removing the springs, they are held in their compressed state by means of the clamp or hand vice shown in Fig. 10.
