Abstract

15,658. Abingdon Works Co., and Hulse, F. July 15. Motor road vehicles.-The driving-axles, more especially of motor tricycles and similar light vehicles, are constructed of an inner undivided shaft, upon which are supported revolving tubular shafts, to which the wheels are attached and which are driven through the usual differential balance gear. The differential-gear centre is driven by a motor belt-pulley with or without the interposition of spur or other gearing. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the spur-wheels b<1>, b', formed on the ends of the tubular shafts B', B<2>, engage with the pinions d<1>, d<2> of the differential-gear centre D, which rotates with the motor belt pulley D<1>, to which it is attached. A clutch chain-wheel E is also fixed to the gear centre to facilitate starting, and a brake G is provided to act near the circumference of the belt pulley. In the form shown in Fig. 2, an intermediate set of spur-wheels D<3>, j<1>, j<2>, D<4> connects the pulley D<1> with the gear centre D, the spindle J being mounted upon the gear case K', K<3> by means of ball bearings. The portion K<1> of the gear case is fixed whilst the portion K<2>, K<3> can either be held fixed by the brake L or left free to rotate upon the outer casing F<2> of the axle. By these means, the engine can be started without causing any movement of the vehicle and the clutch chain-wheel E used in the former case can thus be dispensed with. A brake G is provided acting upon a drum D' attached to the wheel D<1>. In another form, the well-known bevel-wheel type of differential gearing is employed. In all three forms, the differential-gear centre may be fixed to the continuous axle A, which, in that case, would rotate with it.
