Abstract

14,585. Schmitt, E. D. June 30. Stoppers. - Relates to a means for hermetically sealing bottles or jars. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the closure in the neck before it is secured. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sealing-member, and Fig. 5 a similar view of the locking-member. The vessel 1 has a recess 2, into which the securing- member 5 fits against tba shoulders 3, 4. The securing-member may be made of spring metal, and has a circular portion 6, to which is attached a disc of cork or the like 7 making sealing-contact with the lower shoulder. The arms 8 have shoulders 9 adapted to engage the inclined shoulder 3 when the seal is applied, and terminals 10, bent first perpendicularly as at 12 to the arms 8, and then inclined, The terminals have slots 11, which may extend through the portions 13 and as far as the shoulders 14 in the piece 12. The locking- member consists of a cap or disc 15, Fig. 5, with an expanding wedge 16, the inclined side edges 17 of which abut against the upper ends of the slots 11. The wedge has a shoulder 18 adapted to engage the shoulders 14 on the underside. The locking-member and the securing-member are kept together by bending the lower corners of the expanding wedge into short tangs 19, which overlap the material at the sides of the slots in the parts 13. The closure is removed by raising the cap 15. In this operation, the tangs 18 draw the arms 8 together and so free the shoulders 9 from engagement with the upper shoulder of the vessel. The locking-member has a short depending flange 20, which rests upon an annular shoulder 20<1> and is adapted to prevent lateral movement. A modification has a different-shaped securing-member, and dispenses with the flange 20. In it, a short arm is provided to extend beyond the top plate 15, and is adapted to facilitate the removal of the seal.
