Abstract

Gas-producers.-To prevent clinker from adhering to the brickwork, the grate a is placed some few inches below the bottom of the brickwork, which is supported by the plate f upon the superheater c for the steam which is passed into the ashpit. The grate is carried by a plate d which is fixed in such a way that the steam and air exhausted from the ashpit by the draught of the producer shall only pass through the grate and not around its edges or those of its supports. The draught may be produced by the aspiration of a gas-engine piston. The upper part of the producer forms an annular boiler k which also serves as the lower portion of the fuel hopper s. The horizontal portion of the boiler is formed with heat-conducting ribs m, over which the producer gas passes as it escapes through the outlet p. Water entering by the pipe t trickles over the horizontal plate and overflows by the pipe a<2>. Steam descends to the superheater c and thence to the ashpit, along with air drawn in by the pipe g<3> or forced in by the band - fan g<2>. Suitable doors are provided, and a non- conducting covering a<4>. The method of ensuring a varying proportion of steam to air corresponding to variations in the load of the engine or demands for gas is described in Specification No. 13,763, A.D. 1903.
