Oil and spirit burners.-Relates to means for making non-luminous the flames of burners, such as are used for stoves and for incandescent lamps, using petroleum, spirit, or light hydrocarbons, by altering the relative positions of the wick and flame cap or deflector and the extent of wick exposed. In the constructions shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the wick remains stationary and is enclosed between two tubes a, b ; the extent of wick exposed, and the distance of the cap k from the top of the wick, are altered by the racks and pinions shown. In Fig. 2, the cap is shown mounted on a pin in the slotted tube c, which is prolonged into the rack c<1>; this tube is fixed to a cylinder d so that, by turning the pinion c<2>, the wick is exposed at the top, and the cap is also lowered. The lamp is now lit. In order to render the flame non- luminous, the cylinder d may be further lowered, when it will turn the lever h, h<1>, the arm h<1> of which passes through the slot in the tube c, thereby raising the cap. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the cap and cylinder are continuously moved in opposite directions. In that shown in Fig. 8, the wick may be pushed up by means of the hook c<6>; the cap k is, at the same time, lifted to a greater extent by the arm l pushing the pin e by means of the lever r.
